The water service line is the underground pipe that carries water from the city meter at the street to your house. It is buried several feet underground and most homeowners never think about it until something goes wrong.

When a water line fails, the signs are hard to ignore. Your water bill spikes without explanation. Pressure drops throughout the house. A wet spot appears in the yard that never dries. Sometimes the water coming out of your faucets looks brown or rusty.

Most general plumbers are not equipped to handle underground water line work. They do not carry excavation equipment and they are not set up for this type of job. That is where Aspen Utilities comes in. We specialize in underground utility work. It is all we do, every single day.

We use professional excavation equipment to access the water line, replace or repair the damaged section, and restore your yard. Most water line jobs are completed the same day. And unlike sewer work, water line replacement typically does not require city permits, which means fewer delays and faster results.

Why water lines fail: along the Wasatch Front, water service lines are usually buried roughly three to four feet down so they sit below the frost line. What is down there depends on when the house was built. Galvanized steel, common in homes built before the 1960s, rusts from the inside out until pressure drops and the water turns brown. Copper installed through the 1960s to 1990s pins and pinholes where it contacts aggressive soil or fill rock. Older polybutylene and early plastic lines fail at fittings. Add ground movement, cobble backfill pressing against the pipe, and pressure spikes, and a fifty-year-old line has usually run out of life.

What affects the cost: the length of the run from the meter to the house, how deep the line sits, what is on top of it (lawn, mature landscaping, a driveway, a patio, a mature tree), the pipe material and diameter, and access for equipment. A short run across an open lawn is a straightforward job. A long run under a concrete driveway is not. We tell you which one you have before we start, in writing, at no cost.

What the day looks like: we locate the line and mark utilities, set up equipment and protect the work area, excavate down to the pipe, install the new line, pressure test it, and reconnect at both ends. Water is typically off for a few hours in the middle of the day, not all day. We backfill in lifts and compact as we go so the trench does not sink over the next winter, then restore the surface. Before we leave, we walk you through what we found, what we replaced, and what to watch for.

We are not plumbers. We are the excavation specialists plumbers call when the job goes underground.

Water line work is often completed same-day. Sewer lateral jobs typically take 1 to 2 days for permits and inspections.

Full permits and city coordination handled. You do not need to make a single call.

Your yard is left clean and restored. Our goal is to leave your property looking like we were never there.

Licensed, insured, and equipped with professional excavation equipment. Not a plumber with a shovel.
