Your sewer lateral is the underground pipe that carries wastewater from your home to the city sewer main in the street. It is your responsibility as a homeowner, not the city's. And when it breaks, cracks, or collapses, the consequences show up fast.
Slow drains in every bathroom. A sewage smell in the yard. Soggy patches that were not there before. Gurgling sounds from toilets. These are not minor annoyances. They are signs of a structural failure underground that will only get worse.
A lot of homeowners call a plumber first. The plumber snakes the line, charges a few hundred dollars, and leaves. Two weeks later, the problem is back. That is because snaking treats the symptom, not the cause. If the pipe is cracked, collapsed, or invaded by roots, no amount of snaking will fix it.
Aspen Utilities fixes the actual problem. We excavate down to the sewer lateral, replace the damaged section (or the entire line if needed), and restore everything. Sewer lateral work typically takes 1 to 2 days because it requires city permits and inspections. We handle all of that for you.
Why laterals fail: in older Wasatch Front neighborhoods, the lateral is often vitrified clay or cast iron laid in short sections. Clay joints separate as the ground moves, and tree roots find the gap and grow into it because that is where the water is. Cast iron scales and thins from the inside. Orangeburg, a tar-impregnated fiber pipe used in some mid-century construction, deforms and collapses under load. Newer PVC laterals fail less often, but bad bedding, settlement, or a bellied section will still hold water and catch waste.
What affects the cost: the length of the lateral, its depth (sewer runs deeper than water and gets deeper the farther it is from the house), whether the failure is a single section or the full run, what sits above the trench, and the permit and inspection requirements of your city or sewer district. Laterals that cross a street or a sidewalk cost more because of traffic control and pavement restoration.
What the day looks like: we camera the line so you can see the actual failure, pull the permit, notify the utility locate service, then excavate. Wastewater service is interrupted only while the pipe is open, so plan on limiting water use for part of the day. The city or district inspects the new pipe before we backfill. We compact in lifts, restore the surface, and give you the camera footage and the paperwork from the inspection.
