The stop and waste valve is a buried valve that controls the water supply to your home and irrigation system. It is the valve you turn off when you winterize your sprinklers, when you need to shut off water for repairs, or in an emergency.

Over time, these valves corrode, seize up, and stop working. You might not even know yours has failed until you try to use it and nothing happens. That moment usually comes at the worst possible time: during a pipe burst, a sprinkler blowout, or when you are trying to winterize before the first freeze.

A failed stop and waste valve means you cannot shut off water to your property when you need to. That can turn a small problem into a big one fast. Uncontrolled water flow, frozen pipes, burst lines, and flooding are all risks when this valve is not functioning.

Aspen Utilities replaces stop and waste valves quickly and properly. We excavate down to the valve, replace it with a new one, and restore the area. It is a straightforward job when you have the right equipment, and we do.

Why these valves fail: the valve body sits in the ground in a small box, often three to five feet down depending on the city's frost depth standard. Water, soil, and time corrode the stem and the seat. Brass and older cast components seize. The drain port that lets the line downstream empty out plugs with silt, which is the part that matters most in Utah, because a stop and waste that will not drain leaves water sitting in the sprinkler line through a hard freeze. Many valves also get buried under new sod, mulch, or concrete over the years and cannot be reached at all.

What affects the cost: how deep the valve is, whether the box is intact or crushed, what is above it, and whether the pipe on either side is still sound. If we open the ground and find corroded line coming into the valve, we tell you before we go further rather than putting a new valve on a failing pipe.

What the day looks like: most replacements are a few hours. We locate the valve, expose it, shut water at the meter, cut out the old valve, install the new one with a proper box and cover at grade, pressure test, backfill and compact, and show you how to operate it. You leave with a valve you can actually turn, in a box you can actually find.
